THE YULE LOG |

Em Proença‑a‑Velha, antiga vila pertencente ao concelho de Idanha‑a‑Nova, no distrito de Castelo Branco, a população continua a viver de forma intensa o Madeiro de Natal. Todos os anos, ao início da noite de 7 de Dezembro, os rapazes solteiros e os homens dirigem-se para as Tapadas, um grande sobreiral nos arredores da povoação, para arrancarem o Madeiro, uma sobreira grande, velha e seca. No dia 8, ao nascer do dia, começam os trabalhos de preparação e carregamento da sobreira em antigos carros de bois. Por volta do meio-dia é hora de retemperar forças com pão, sardinhas, febras, enchidos e vinho. Por essa hora, mais ou menos, chegam as mulheres e raparigas com flores e laranjas para enfeitar os carros do Madeiro. Depois de tudo preparado inicia-se o transporte do Madeiro para a povoação: Homens e mulheres tomam posição; pegam nas trancas presas a cordas e correntes atadas aos carros e puxam pelo Madeiro. É com enorme algazarra e alarido, ao som do búzio, e de cânticos, que se percorre a distância entre as Tapadas e a povoação. No percurso até chegar ao Adro da Igreja, local onde o Madeiro vai permanecer, fazem-se três paragens rituais; para descansar, para dar "Vivas" a quem colaborou e para molhar as gargantas com vinho ou jeropiga, que alguns dos intervenientes distribuem a toda a população. Chegados ao Adro da Igreja, descarrega-se o Madeiro e juntam-se-lhe mais troncos transportados em tractores. Os "influentes" do Madeiro dão os últimos "Vivas" por este ano e cada um vai à sua vida. No dia 24, véspera de Natal, ao final da tarde, voltam a juntar-se para acenderem o Madeiro, o qual deverá arder em grande força à hora da Missa de Galo e pela noite fora, para aquecer o Menino Jesus É noite de festa, a população aquece-se ao redor do Madeiro. Para aquecer por dentro há sempre algum petisco, filhóses, vinho e aguardente!... Para aquecer a alma há cânticos, os amigos e a família! In Proença‑a‑Velha, an ancient village in the municipality of Idanha‑a‑Nova, district of Castelo Branco, the population still intensely celebrates the Yule log. Every year by nightfall on the 7th December, the single young men and older men (called “Influentes do Madeiro”) make their way to the “Tapadas”, a large field of cork-oak trees in the outskirts of the village, to root up the Yule log, a huge, old and barren cork-oak tree. On the 8th, by dawn, they start the task of preparing and loading this oak tree upon ancient ox-carts. Around noon it’s time to retemper and strengthen oneself with bread, sardines, meat, traditional sausages and wine. At about the same time, the women and young maids arrive at the place bringing flowers and oranges to decorate the Yule log carts. After everything is arranged, the transportation of the Yule log starts: men and women take their places, hold bars tied to ropes and chains attached to the carts and pull the Yule log in a procession. The whole atmosphere is noisy, cheerful and clamorous. While one whistles the dog-whelk, the others sing traditional songs and so they proceed towards the village. On their way to the Churchyard, where the Yule log is to be placed, they stop three times, according to the ritual, to rest, to give cheers to those who helped and to refresh themselves with wine or liquor “jeropiga”, which someone offers to the whole population. Once in the Churchyard, the Yule log is unloaded as well as other smaller logs which are carried in tractors. The “Influentes do Madeiro” give the last cheers and go to their homes. On the 24th, Christmas Eve, by nightfall, they get together again to light up the Yule log, which is expected to burn strongly by the time of the Evening Christmas Mass and so continue throughout the night, to warm up the Holy Baby Jesus. It’s a time for celebration; the population warms up around the Yule log. They eat and drink and they are cheerful and merry... They sing Christmas carols with family and friends.
